If you’re heading into Clearing, you’ll probably be spending a bit of time on the phone. Before you can add a uni to your UCAS application, you’ll need to speak to them directly and chat through your grades, the course, and why you want to study there.

It can feel like a lot, but with a little prep you can make those calls confidently — and maybe even enjoy them.

Can You Use Clearing?

You’re eligible for Clearing if:

  • You’re applying after 30 June

  • You didn’t receive any offers (or none you wanted to accept)

  • You didn’t meet the conditions of your offers

  • You’ve declined your firm choice using the ‘decline my place’ button in UCAS

LUNA’s Top Tips for Clearing Calls

Get set up before you dial

Have everything you need right in front of you so the conversation flows smoothly:

  • Your Personal ID and Clearing number

  • Your grades or UCAS Tariff points

  • A few bullet points on why you want this course (and why you’d be a great fit)

Pro tip: Make a simple list with the uni name, phone number, course code and title, plus a space for notes so you don’t mix things up between calls.

Find somewhere quiet with good phone signal — and if you prefer not to use the phone, check if the uni offers live chat, email or social media contact options.

Bring the energy

Be positive, polite and enthusiastic. Show you’re genuinely interested and explain why you want that place. Even if you’re feeling nervous, a calm and friendly tone goes a long way.

Do your homework

Don’t call a uni without knowing anything about them. Read up on the course, the campus and what student life is like there. It shows you care — and could be the difference between a yes and a no.

Make the call yourself

You’re the one they want to hear from. It might feel nerve-wracking, but admissions teams are there to help and they’ll be rooting for you to succeed.

Keep your cool

It’s normal to need to call a few different unis. Take a deep breath, go one call at a time, and remember — there are plenty of great options out there.

Don’t rush your decision

Yes, Clearing moves quickly — but you still want to choose somewhere you’ll be happy. If you need time to think or explore similar courses, take it.

Talk it through

Speak to friends, family or teachers if you’re unsure. They can help you think through your options and give you a fresh perspective.

Know your options

If picking up the phone isn’t your thing, check for other ways to contact unis — from live chat to DMs on social media.

Look after yourself

Results day can be intense. Stay hydrated, get outside for some fresh air, and take breaks between calls. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, Student Minds has great tips and advice for looking after your wellbeing.
